How to reach Macleodganj Dharamshala - Getting there

Mcleodganj by Air Nearest airport: Gaggal (20 km 45 minutes), connected to Delhi on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by Jagson Airlines. Hire a cab to town for Rs 350.

Mcleodganj by Rail Nearest railhead: Chakki Bank (80 km/ 2-3 hrs), connected to Delhi by the Jammu Express and to Kolkata by the Jammu Tawi Express. Hire a cab (Rs 600 approx) to McLeodganj.

Mcleodganj by Road NH1 and NH21 link Delhi to Kiratpur via Chandigarh. Drive further to Una, then via Nehran Pukhar to Kangra. McLeodganj is 31 km from here. To get here from Shimla, drive to Bilaspur and on to Mandi. Follow NH20 to Dharamsala via Jogindernagar and Palampur.

Distance between Dharamshala to Mcleodganj is about 10 Kms via Dharamshala Cantt. It takes arond 20 minutes to reach Macleodganj from Dharamshala.

However there is an alternative route from Dharamshala to Mcleodganj for light vehicles. It is called Khara Danda Marg. You can take this route from Kotwali bazaar Dharamshala. You need to be a perfect driver in this route which is steep and around 3 Kms. Tourists are advised not to drive through this route. However get the heavenly experience by walking in Khara Danda Marg.

On the way you will get the entire view of Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar Ranges. There are temples and Tibetan Monasteries and Tibetan colonies on the way.

So take a stroll from Dharamshala to Mcleodganj via Khara Danda Marg, a wonderful trekking experience.

Now the traffic police have made it one way for the traffic to avoid any inconvenience. Therefore Khada danda Marg is the best option to trek up from Dharamshala to Dalai Lama Temple in mcleodganj
