Places of Interest in Nurpur - How to reach Nurpur the Unexplored destination in Himachal Pradesh
Nurpur is a small town situated in Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh. This is a historic town on the northwestern region of Kangra.
The history of Nurpur dates back to 11th century. Raja Jhet Pal founded this town in the 11th century. Many rulers have ruled this city since then. However it was under the rule of King Basu this town developed. Nurpur fort was one such structure which was built by Raja Basu. The fort was built between 1580 - 1630 and is still intact.
The fort was later attacked and captured by Mughals despite strong resistance from King Basu's son.
When the entire north India was captured by Mughals this town was visited by Nur Jehan the queen of the then Emperor Jehangeer. It was known as Dhameri town in those days. The queen was so delighted and impressed by the beauty and peace of the town that she decided to stay here forever. However the local people did not want this and very intelligently persuaded her to leave the town. They convinced her that by staying here for long would result in losing her beauty because of a strange skin disease.
Later on Dhameri name was changed to Nurpur to honour the queen and dedicated to queen Nurjehan.
Later in the 19th and 20th centuries the town was ruled by the local Pathania Rajputs. This princely state was later on amalgamated with Indian Republic after independence
The main attraction in Nurpur is the Fort which is very famous for its architecture. There is an ancient Idol of Lord Krishna inside the fort which is again wonderful work of art.
Apart from fort one can enjoy the natural beauty here. The panoramic forests are amazing and the experience walking down is breathtaking. Small Jhabar river adds to the attraction of this small town.
Nurpur is also very famous for its juicy oranges which are supplied to all parts of the country.
